An analysis of the present situation of Jewish colonization in Bira-Bidjan was made by A. Merezhin, official of the Ozet, society for Jewish land settlement, at a meeting of the Ozet Executive, following his return from a three months’ stay in Bira-Bidjan.
Mr. Merezhin expressed the opinion that Bira-Bidjan will become an important point of Jewish colonization in Russia. At the same time, however, he acknowledged that great difficulties lie in the way of the realization of these possibilities.
Criticism of the original report on Bira-Bidjan, made by the agronomist Brook, was voiced by Mr. Merezhin, who declared that the report was not thorough. He expressed praise for the methods of the Agrojoint, agency of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, under the leadership of Dr. Joseph Rosen, and urged the Comzet, governmental department for Jewish land settlement, to follow the same methods as the Agrojoint pursues in the Jewish colonies under its jurisdiction.
A resolution recognizing Bira-Bidjan as a suitable place for Jewish migration was adopted. However, it is necessary to study the question of improving conditions in the district, the resolution stated. A resolution adopted welcomes the decision of the Soviet government to erect a large government farm in Bira-Bidjan from government funds, which will enable
