The Italian Government prepared today to segregate Jewish children in separate classrooms and special schools. It was officially announced that separate sections would be established in elementary schools in which there are at least 10 Jewish pupils. These Jewish sections will be supported by the State.
Jewish communities will also be permitted, with the Education Ministry’s authorization, to establish Jewish schools enjoying legal rights. Their curriculum will be the same as that of general schools, except that the Catholic religion will not be taught. Jewish teachers will be admitted to Jewish schools. Enrollment for Jewish sections of public schools and for Jewish community schools will end Oct. 5.
A Naval Ministry Decree today retired Admiral Paoli Maroni from his command of the Fourth Naval Division. Admiral Maroni, who is of Jewish origin, commanded the Italian squadron which saw service off the Balearic Islands.
