Chairman Hubert H. Humphrey of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near Eastern Affairs, today called Senate attention to his statement that “I was shocked to learn that Israel is not included in our military exchange programs.”
The Senator was referring to the American military, naval and air training program in the Middle East, which trains officers and specialists on an exchange basis. He said: “I have recommended to the Secretary of State that Israel be included, and I am told that plans are now underway.”
Sen. Humphrey had a talk with President Eisenhower at the White House yesterday and revealed that the two discussed the “delicacy” of handling foreign policy with respect to the Middle East. The Minnesota Democrat told the President the situation in the area was improving somewhat but that this did not mean there was anything to cause over-enthusiasm because the situation remained “pretty bad.” The Senator expressed a belief that the Administration is in process of developing a sounder Middle East policy through implementation of the Eisenhower Doctrine.
