Senator Herbert H. Lehman received the first John Dewey Award, presented by the New York Teachers Guild yesterday in memory of the late educator and philosopher for the Senator’s “demonstrated courage and integrity.”
Sen. Lehman, addressing the Teachers Guild luncheon at which the presentation was made, criticized President Eisenhower for giving Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy a “slap on the wrist” and surrendering to “appeasement and compromise” in dealing with Sen. McCarthy.
