Former Sen. Herbert H. Lehman and former Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter were among the 31 persons named by President Kennedy this weekend to receive the new Presidential Medal of Freedom.
The new medal, which will be presented to the recipients in September, is the highest civilian honor that a President can bestow in peace time. The award was established by Executive order last February to reward annually those “who contribute significantly to the quality of American life.”
