The office of Sen. George McGovern (D., S. Dak.) asked the Jewish Telegraphic Agency today to clarify what they termed “a misleading headline” in the Thursday July 8 Daily News Bulletin on an exclusive interview with the Senator, the only announced Presidential candidate. The headline, “McGovern Opposes Open-Ended Military Aid To Israel” came from the Senator’s assertion that all arms requests should be scrutinized and no “blank checks” should be given. However, Washington jargon uses “open-ended military aid to Israel” to refer to the Jackson Amendment of 1970 authorizing the President to give Israel as much military sales credit as he deemed necessary. McGovern voted for the Jackson Amendment, and as stated in Thursday’s interview, does not favor its repeal.
