Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-Minn.) decided not to run for president in 2000, citing chronic back pain. Wellstone would have become the second Jew in recent political history to seek his party’s nomination. Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) dropped out of the primary race during the 1996 campaign.
