The Senate adopted unanimously today a House approved amendment to the foreign aid bill aimed at preventing use of United States assistance to Egypt for aggressive purposes by the Egyptian Government, The amendment was proposed by Sen, Jacob Javits, New York Republican, and Sen. Ernest Gruening Alaska Democrat.
The amendment reads: “No assistance shall be furnished under this act to the United Arab Republic unless the President finds and reports within 30 days of such finding to the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations committee and to the Speaker of the House that such assistance is essential to the national interest of the United States, and further that such assistance will neither directly nor indirectly assist aggressive actions by the United Arab Republic.”
A final vote on the foreign aid bill will be taken soon by a joint conference of the House and Senate.
