Senate Body to Examine U.S. Relations with Israel and Arab States

U.S. policy in the Middle East, Including relations with Israel and the Arab states, is expected to be examined in a high level review of foreign policy voted unanimously today by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee

The committee approved a resolution by Sen. Wayne Morse, Oregon Democrat, for chairman Theodore F. Green, Rhode Island Democrat, to name a four member subcommittee. The subcommittee will work out policies and procedures. The full committee retains veto power over subcommittee recommendations. The review will take place in coming months.

Meanwhile, plans were announced here for an overall review and evaluation of U.S. foreign and defense policies, including Middle Eastern aspects, by the advisory committee on foreign policy of the Democratic Party advisory council. The advisory body, under the chairmanship of former Secretary of State Dean Acheson, will meet here on January 20 for the foreign policy deliberations.

Among members of the Democratic advisory committee on foreign policy are President Irving M. Engel of the American Jewish Committee Benjamin V. Cohen, former U. S. delegate to the United Nations, Abraham Feinberg, president of the Israel Bond Organization, former Senator Herbert H. Lehman, and S. Ralph Lazrus, prominent New York Jewish leader. The foreign policy committee will discuss and prepare position papers and recommended drafts of policy statements for consideration by the top Democratic advisory council which meets in February.
