The Senate Foreign Relations Committee continued yesterday a closed inquiry on the activities of the Jewish Agency. Senator J. William Fulbright, Arkansas Democrat, chairman of the committee, identified a witness as Gottlieb Hammer of New York, formerly an officer of the New York section of the Jewish Agency for Israel. Since April 1960, Mr. Hammer has been executive vice chairman of the Jewish Agency, Inc., which is not a subject of this inquiry. He was accompanied by the Agency’s attorney, Maurice Boukstein of New York.
The Senate committee has for several months been conducting a study of the administration of the Foreign Agents Registration Act of 1938. Numerous registered agents have been questioned by the Senate committee which is planning to recommend additional legislation. The Jewish Agency, American section, is registered under the law since it represents the World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency with its headquarters in Jerusalem.
