The Senate today by a voice vote and without dissent adopted a resolution condemning the United Nation’s Third Committee actions against Zionism and “urging the UN General Assembly to repudiate that action. The Senate acted swiftly on motion of Sen. Richard Stone (D. Fla.) to adopt the bipartisan resolution sponsored by Sens. Hubert H. Humphrey (D. Minn.) and William Brock (R. Tenn.). A few hours earlier, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee had approved it also by voice vote without dissent. The resolution was endorsed before the Senate vote by 40 Senators including Democratic Deputy Leader Robert Byrd (W. Va.) and Minority Leader Hugh Scott (R. Pa.).
The Senate’s action follows the endorsement of an identical resolution by 415 members of the House of Representatives last week, believed to be a record for any resolution. That number is only 20 short of the House total membership of 435, and even some of those possibly would be among the signers were they not absent because of illness or hospitalization, according to the office of Rep. Sidney Yates (D. III.).
Among the endorsers of the Senate resolution were both Senators from. Illinois and Florida where Egyptian President Anwar Sadat will visit on his current U.S. tour. They are Charles Percy (R. III.), Adlei Stevenson (D. III.); and Stone and Lawton Chiles, Democrats of Florida, Sens. Lloyd Bentsen (D. Tex.) and Jacob K. Javits (R. NY) also were among the sponsors.
