Protests were voiced in the Senate today by Sen. Harrison A. Williams, Jr., New Jersey Democrat, and Sen. Jacob K. Javits, New York Republican, against the Soviet refusal to permit baking of matzoth for Passover Observance next month.
Sen. Williams made known that he was seeking to determine if there was some effective way the United States Government could intercede. The Senator said “this arbitrary action exposes Soviet allegations that there is no official policy of anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union.”
Sen. Javits said the refusal even to permit the import of matzoth was another “direct attack by the Kremlin against Jewish religious practices.” He said Premier Khrushchev “owes the world an explanation” and that the action should be protested by all free nations.”
