Senate-House conferees may restore a portion or all of the reductions made by the Senate in the allocation for Israel contained in the Mutual Security bill passed this week-end by the Senate to authorize aid for free nations, it was stated here today.
The Senate approved the bill after voting a reduction of $200,000,000, representing an across-the-board cut which reduced the final Senate figure for Israel to $64,456,000. This sum represented aid for Jewish refugees in Israel while an additional amount in technical assistance, between two and three million dollars, was also provided in funds covering technical help for the Near East. A previous cut by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee reduced the $76,000,000 asked by the Administration for Jewish refugees to $66,380,000. The House did not touch the $76,000,000 figure when it passed its version of the M.S.A. bill.
Rep. Lawrence H. Smith, of Wisconsin, in remarks to the House of Representatives, has called attention to an article in the June issue of “Reader’s Digest,” which complains that “the Arabs don’t love us anymore” because of America’s friendly attitude toward Israel. Rep. Smith complained of “an insistent and rather biased policy” practiced by this country against the Arab states.
