Debate opened in the Senate today on the McCarran Omnibus Immigration Bill as Sen. Herbert H. Lehman described it as “strikingly similar to the basic racial philosophy officially espoused so unfortunately and with such tragic consequences in Nazi Germany a few short years ago.” The bill is opposed by American liberal groups and by all major Jewish organizations.
Sen. Lehman recommended that the McCarran Bill be returned to committee for further study and urged hearings for a liberal Humphrey-Lehman substitute measure. The Humphrey-Lehman Bill is supported by Senators Lehman, Humphrey, Wayne Morse, Estes Kefauver, Paul Douglas. Brien McMahon, William Benton, Tom Pastore, and James E. Murray.
