The Senate today passed and sent to the White House the final version of the McCarran-Walter omnibus immigration bill which was reported out by Senate-House conferees early this week. Only a few Senators were on the floor to participate in the voice vote by which the bill was passed.
Senators Herbert Lehman and Hubert Humphrey offered token opposition today and expressed hope that President Truman will veto the measure. They said they were confident that enough votes could be mustered to sustain a veto. The bill, which has been opposed as “racist” by major religious and civic groups, was passed yesterday by the House.
