The Senate today rejected the Humphrey-Lehman substitute immigration bill by a vote of 51 to 27. The bill was submitted in an attempt to replace the McCarran Omnibus immigration Bill with a more liberal measure.
Sen. Lehman said the Senate would do “a grave disservice to the country and the peace of the world” if it passes the McCarran Bill. He described the bill as dangerous to civil rights and has compared it with Nazi legislation. Opponents of the McCarran Bill have conceded that the bill will pass but predict that President Truman will veto it. In order to obtain a final vote on the McCarran Bill by tomorrow night. Sen. McCarran and opponents of his bill have agreed to limit debate on amendments.
