The Senate Judiclary Committee today reported out the Administration’s immigration reform bill, assuring action on the measure by the full Senate before adjournment. The committee voted 14 to 2 to approve the measure. The two negative votes were registered by Sen James O. Eastland, of Mississippi, and Sen. John L. McClellan, of Arkansas, both Democrats.
The bill would terminate the discriminatory national origins quota system by 1968, and otherwise liberalize entrance requirements. However, the Senate committee for the first time in history imposed an amendment putting a ceiling on immigration from Western Hemisphere nations.
