The Senate voted 90-9 on Tuesday evening to confirm federal appellate Judge David Souter to be an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
President Bush’s first Supreme Court nominee, who currently serves on the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston, is not expected to join the high court until next week. The court began its new term Monday. (See Page 4.)
Only two Jewish groups had publicly opposed Souter’s confirmation: the National Council of Jewish Women and the American Jewish Congress.
