Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee tonight urged that a substantial portion of the $195,000,000 earmarked for the Middle East under the Mutual Security Act be allocated to the State of Israel.
Speaking at a dinner in tribute to Edward S. Silver, Brooklyn chairman for the State of Israel Bond drive, which was held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Senator Kefauver deplored the fact that “there are some people in the United States today that say we ought to side with the Arabs.”
The Tennessee legislator declared that the United States should take the lead in establishing peace between Israel and the Arab states. He added that Israel is eager to make peace “and does not want to live in an armed camp.”
Israel Labor Minister Golda Meyerson told the guests that Israel has entered a “fruitful era of industrial pioneering.” She pointed out, however, that agricultural development, irrigation and the cultivation of the Negev, the southern part of Israel, were as greatly dependent on Israel Bond proceeds as the establishment of the new or expansion of old industries.
