Senator Herbert H. Lehman of New York will receive the Stephen S. Wise Award of the American Jewish Congress next month for his defense of civil rights and civil liberties, according to Dr. Israel Goldstein, AJC president.
The Stephen S. Wise Award which bears a cash value of $1,000, is being given to Senator Lehman for his “eloquent and courageous defense of civil liberties which have been the bulwark of our American democracy.” Presentation of the award was to have been made last year, when the Stephen S. Wise Award winners for 1953 were announced, but ceremonies had to be postponed until now.
