Passage of legislature providing for a “baby bonus” is being urged by Senator Nathan Straus of New York. Senator Straus is an authority on child welfare, having worked eighteen ydars with his father in combatting infant mortality.
“I believe it would be a good investment for the state”, Senator Straus declares, “to pay a mother a cash bonus for every baby that one adds to the population of the state.”
“Motherhood subsidies”, Straus believes, “would assist in promoting early marriage among the best class population. At present, he holds, shiftless, thoughtless men and women are ready to undertake the responsibilities of marriage without considering what it may lead to, and many of the better class postpone or avoid marriage feeling that they are not well enough situated financially to take care of the offspring.
A baby bonus would induce this better type to undertake the responsibilities of marriage and parenthood, Straus asserts.
