In an address delivered in Akron, Senator Oscar Understood of Alabama bitterly decried the wave of prejudice and hatred toward the alien which is now sweeping the country. He quoted the Democratic platform of 1856, stating that every attempt to abridge the privilege of citizens and deprive the oppressed of every nation of the asylum of liberty which our country offered them, ought to be strongly resisted. In this address before the Chamber of Commerce in Cleveland, Underwood also attacked the Ku Klux Klan and announced that at the Democratic convention in New York he will demand the adoption of an anti-Klan plank.
Underwood is scheduled for similar addresses in many Ohio cities, and
Kluxers are much disturbed, flooding newspapers with violent letters against him.
