A bi-partisan statement urging the United States Government to grant financial aid to Israel was issued here today jointly by Senators Paul H. Douglas, Democrat, and Owen Brewster, Republican, through the American Christian Palestine Committee. The Senators pointed out that Israel “by its conduct, not only in domestic affairs but in the international arena as well, has shown itself to be the one bulwark of democracy in that part of the world.”
“The interests of the United Nations, as well as of the United States,” they stressed, make it imperative “that this region adopt a free, and not a totalitarian way of life.” To accomplish this purpose, the Senators warned, “the people in these lands must be helped financially as well as supplied with Western ‘know-how.’ The greatest amount of care must be taken, however, to ensure that such help is not accorded those countries of the Near East which in the light of their reaction to World War II and to the Korean invasion, have demonstrated that they may not be relied upon as allies.”
In view of Israel’s proven loyalty to the democratic world, they concluded, and “without prejudicing the possibilities of aid to those countries which may yet those to side with the freedom-loving people of the world, our government should give Israel special and immediate consideration in any program of aid designed for Near Eastern countries.”
