Sponsors of immigration legislation which would permit entry into the United States of 5, 000 or more Egyptian Jews indicated optimism tonight on prospects for favorable Senate action before adjournment this month. Congress is expected to adjourn for the session by August 31.
Optimism was based on Sen. James Eastland’s scheduling of a Judiciary Committee meeting Tuesday morning. The Eastland Committee is considering various immigration bills in open session. Sen, John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts says he has reason to think his bill will be favorably treated by the Committee and reported to the Senate floor for action. Passage of this bill by the Senate this session could pave the way for House passage next session. The Kennedy bill has 16 provisions, including one permitting the entry of Egyptian Jews as escapees from persecution.
