Senators concerned with the importance of Israel to the defense of the free world are expected to make an effort this week on the floor of the Senate to restore the cuts made by the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services committees in allocations for Israel and the Near East contained in the Foreign Aid Bill.
The measure reported out of the Senate committees last week-end reduced to $10,000,000 the $50,000,000 originally provided in the House bill to aid refugees settling in Israel. An across-the-board cut in the House version by 30 percent also deprived Israel of a portion of other economic aid designated by the House for the Near East.
A number of Senators who are particularly interested in Israel in connection with the defense of the free world are rallying to impress on the Senate the necessity for the restoration of the full amount of aid provided Israel and the Near East in the House version of the Foreign Aid Bill. Floor debate on the measure may begin tomorrow with a vote expected by Friday.
