Sentences of from two to eight years imprisonment were imposed today by the Homel Regional Court on eight workers, charged with anti-Semitism, in a trial which lasted several days and attracted wide interest. The accused were found guilty of torturing two Jewish girl workers in the Dobrush paper factory, Geroi Truda.
It was established that the local Communist group, with 300 members, did nothing to protect the victims, who were persecuted in a manner similar to that practiced against Miss Dreize Barshay in the glass factory “Octiabr.” at Bobruisk. The party collective tolerated anti-Semitism along with contra-revolutionary activities at the factory, it was brought out at the trial.
Talkov, leader of the band which perpetrated the indignities against their Jewish fellow-workers, was sentenced to eight years-in-jail, to be followed by deportation. The others were sentenced to three years and two others to two years each.
The guilty in the Barshay case, which was staged as a demonstration against anti-Semitism, got terms of two and three years imprisonment.
