Funeral services were held here Friday for Morris Morgenstern, a financier and philanthropist, who died Thursday at 87. He had contributed to numerous causes, Jewish and non-Jewish. He set up in 1949 the Morris Morgenstern Foundation to provide financial aid to religious, educational and charitable institutions of all faiths. He often served as a cantor on High Holy Days. Mr. Morgenstern owned several important historical documents, among them George Washington’s famous letter to the Touro Synagogue of Newport, R.I., which included the phrase “to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.”
