Funeral services will be held today for Joseph Lateimer, at one time the most successful Yiddish playwright in America, who died here Saturday.
Lateimer wrote more than 100 plays and operettas which were performed on the Jewish stage of New York and abroad until a few years ago. His had a tremendous influence on the growth of the Jewish theatre throughout the world but he became a totally forgotten figure after 1929 when the Jewish theatre was hit by the depression.
The Jewish Theatrical Alliance is arranging the funeral for Mr. Lateimer, who died at the home of distant relatives.
Born in Yassi, Rumania, in 1853, Lateimer came to the United States in 1884 and lived here until the time of his death.
