In a call issued by the Jewish Education Association of New York, the week beginning October 7 has been proclaimed as “Jewish Education Week.” The Talmud Torahs and other Jewish religious schools begin their sessions on October 7, and the call, addressed principally to Jewish parent, s designed to secure a larger registration and attendance in these schools.
The proclamation, signed by Judge Otto A. Rosalsky, acting president; Samuel Rottenberg, chairman, board of directors, and Bernard Semel, honorary secretary, stresses the importance of religious education “in a changing world.” Faced with “the challenge of discrimination and persecution,” the call declares, Jews can help their children best by teaching them the faith and traditions of their fathers.
“Jewish Education Week” will be marked by special meetings of parents with principals and teachers of Hebrew schools; addresses at meetings of Jewish organizations, and sermons by rabbis in synagogues. Ivriah, the women’s division of the Jewish Education Association, will cooperate with the local schools in the distribution of specially prepared literature for parents.
