Seton Hall, a Catholic Institution, Will Teach Jewish History to Educators

Seton Hall University, a Roman Catholic Institution, will co-sponsor an eight-week course to aid elementary and high school teachers in instructing classes on the history of the Jewish people. The course, to be presented on the South Orange campus, is co-sponsored by Seton Hall’s Institute of Judaeo-Christian Studies and the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith. Sister Rose Therring, program coordinator, said the primary appeal will be to parochial school teachers but the course is open to all individuals.

Leading Jewish scholars will lecture on religion and historical aspects of the Jewish people. A Christian scholar will be invited to offer comments and reactions to each lecture and discussion periods will follow the presentations. Topics to be covered include early Judaism, the Talmudic period, Judaism under Islamic rule, Jewish life in the Middle Ages, the Emancipation of West European Jews, the East European Jewish communities, the “Zionist idea” and the “American experience.”
