Several hundred new immigrants have spent the last few weeks helping the army build and maintain fortifications in the Jordan Valley. The World Zionist Organization’s aliya department called the project a great success. It is strictly voluntary and, according to the WZO, contributed toward the newcomers’ speedy absorption and integration into Israeli life. It also changed the soldiers’ stereotypical image of new olim in addition to reducing the time served by reservists and contributing to defense.
