Several thousand people attended a memorial service Monday night at the Libertad Temple to pay homage to the 1854 Israeli soldiers who died in the Yom Kippur War. An overflow audience of hundreds filled the street outside the temple to participate in the service. Israeli Finance Minister Pinhas Sapir, in Buenos Aires for a short visit, described the courage of the Israeli soldiers and their families and the plight of those families with fathers and sons both on the battlefields.
“We could not think of defeat,” Sapir said. “It would have been similar to the destruction of the Third Temple.” In addition to defending their homeland the Israeli soldiers also fought to defend the Jewish people everywhere, he added. Lazaro Robinson, chairman of the Emergency Coordinating Committee of the Jewish Community, also spoke at the service, and Cantor Leibele Schwartz recited the El Moleh Rachamim.
