Seymour Martin Lipset, a leading scholar of democracy and political sociology, died at age 84. Lipset, whose areas of expertise included political sociology, trade union organization, social stratification, public opinion and the sociology of intellectual life, succumbed to complications from a stroke Sunday in a Virginia hospital.
