Sgt. Meyer Levin, Jewish youth from Brooklyn, who gained nation-wide fame when he sank the Japanese battleship Haruna, while acting as bombardier on the plane piloted by Captain Colin Kelly, has added another decoration to the Distinguished Flying Cross he already wears, it was reported today in copyrighted press association dispatches from Gen. MacArthur’s headquarters in Australia.
Sgt. Levin has been awarded the Silver Star for successfully bombing a 15,000-ton Japanese transport during the battle of the Coral Sea. In the face of withering anti-aircraft fire, Levin dropped eight 500-pound bombs directly on the bow of the Japanese vessel. Returning to its base, Sgt. Levin’s plane ran out of fuel just as it reached friendly territory and he and the other crew members were forced to bail out.
