Herbert A. Leland, attorney and trustee for the estate of Matthew S. and Florence Black, presented a $390,000 check for Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem to Maurice A. Harband, president of the San Francisco Friends of Shaare Zedek Hospital, and Hershey Gold, general chairman of its Western Region.
Gold said the Matthew S. and Florence Black Geriatric Wing would be part of the new $36 million Shaare Zedek Medical Center scheduled for completion next year. It is situated on a 14 acre site opposite Mt. Herzl.
At a luncheon attended by business executives, attorneys and friends of the hospital, Leland told of the wish of the one-time jeweler to help foster a geriatric program in Israel. Leland and his wife, Betty, who had known Mr. and Mrs. Black for many years, inspected various institutions before deciding to name Shaare Zedek Hospital the sole beneficiary of the charitable portion of the estate.
Harband, chairman of the luncheon, noted that Shaare Zedek had inaugurated an innovative geriatric program more than 10 years ago and is a pacesetter for Israel in this field.
