Egypt has honored its peace treaty with Israel despite recent strains over the war in Lebanon, Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir told Israel Radio. Nevertheless, after a meeting several days ago with Egypt’s Ambassador to Israel, Soad Mortada, Shamir conceded that there were “certain problems” in the relations between the two countries.
The Foreign Minister indicated that Israel was displeased with anti-Israel comments in the Egyptian news media and by Egyptian leaders, but emphasized that Egypt remained loyal to the peace treaty. “We don’t see any signs of a deterioration of the peace relations” between the two countries, Shamir said.
