Prime Minister Yitzhak Shmir sent Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev a cable Monday night expressing Israel’s deep sorrow over the Trans-Siberian railway tragedy Saturday, in which at least 400 people were killed and some 600 injured.
It occurred when a natural gas pipeline exploded just as two trains were passing through a narrow gorge in the Ural Mountains. Both trains were enveloped in flame.
