Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir will meet with Pope John Paul II in Rome Thursday, it was announced here tonight. Shamir will leave for Italy tomorrow to attend a meeting of Israel’s Ambassadors to Europe. While in Italy, he is also scheduled to meet with Premier Giovanni Spadolini and Foreign Minister Emilio Colombo.
Israeli sources said that the Middle East peace process, the Golan Heights and the issue of Jerusalem are expected to figure in Shamir’s talk with the Pope. In addition, the two men are expected to discuss the situation in Poland. Shamir is expected to reissue a standing invitation by Israel to the Pontiff to visit the Holy Land.
