Housing Minister Zeev Sharef said last night that the housing problem in Israel has reached crisis proportions that only large scale pre-fabricated or mobile housing could solve. He said his ministry was working hard to implement such plans, Sharef disclosed that the price of housing rose by 29 percent in 1971 compared to a general price rise of only 12 percent.
As a result, he told a Labor Party meeting here, a third of the couples who married last year applied for government aid in housing. Sharef said that building more houses for rental, as demanded in some quarters, was not a solution applicable to conditions in Israel. He said the initial investment would be so high that the rents would be prohibitive.
