High tribute was paid here today in leading American newspapers to Moshe Sharett, who died yesterday in Israel, with some of them devoting long columns to his historic activities prior and after the establishment of Israel. The New York Times carried an editorial lauding him as an “extraordinary man, writer, linguist and diplomat.”
In Washington, Senator Jacob K. Javits, New York Republican, memorialized Mr. Shareet in an address before the U.S. Senate. The Israeli Embassy and seven consular officers in the United States will hold memorial services tomorrow. Memorial services will also be held tomorrow in the auditorium of the Jewish Agency in New York.
American Jewish organizations continued today to express grief over the death of Mr. Sharett in messages cabled to the Jewish Agency in Jerusalem of which he was the chairman. The American Jewish Congress and the National Community Relations Advisory Council joined with other organizations in mourning the passing of the world Zionist leader who was in close touch with Jewish life in the United States and intimate friendship with practically all the leading figures in the American Jewish community.
