Leaders of Israel’s cultural and political life, headed by President Zalman Shazar and Deputy Prime Minister Abba Eban, paid final tribute today to Prof. Yoel Racan at funeral rites for the late rector of the Hebrew University, who died earlier this week in Florence at the age of 56.
This morning, Dr. Racah’s body lay in state in the Weizmann Plaza of the University, while the University Senate convened a special session at which eulogies were delivered by President Shazar and colleagues of the deceased. Led by President Shazar, the funeral procession left for Har Hamenuhot Cemetery, on the outskirts of Jerusalem, where Prof. Racah was laid to rest. Prof. Racah’s remains were brought here from Rome, after religious rites had been conducted, with many dignitaries present, in the Great Synagogue at the Italian capital.
