The Italian freighter San Carlo sailed from Marseilles late last evening for Beirut carrying a large supply of ammunition and military equipment for Lebanon. Notwithstanding orders to the contrary from their left-wing union leaders, the French longshoremen were persuaded to disregard the union’s orders by Arab dock workers and, after earlier having refused to load the vessel, decided to go ahead with the scheduled loading.
Working feverishly to beat the U.N. Security Council’s cease-fire deadline, the longshoremen hauled aboard a cargo of 1,200 cases of gunpowder, 300 cases of cartridges, 47 cases of field gun ammunition, 158 cases of hand grenades, 140 cases of bombs and 84 cases of detonators. The entire consignment is addressed to the Minister of National Defense of the Lebanese Government.
