Instructions to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the death of Sholom Aleichem, the late Yiddish humorist, were issued by the Commissariats of Education in Ukrainia and White Russia.
Memorial meetings are scheduled to take place on Thursday in Jewish and non-Jewish schools, clubs and factories. Many schools and streets in the Ukraine and White Russia will be named after the later writer.
The observance of Peace Week, sponsored by the League of Neighbors, the Union of East and West, and the Fellowship of Faiths, was launched in New York City at a mass meeting held in Temple Emanu-El. The speakers included Judge Jacob A. Panken, Ellis Chadbourne, President of the Federated Youth Movement of New York, Rennie Smith. M. P., Directing Secretary of the British National Council for Prevention of War. Miss Jessie Wallace Hughan, of the War Registration League, Kedar Nuth Das Gupra, of the League of Neighbors, and Bishop Paul Jones, of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, who presided.
More than 1,000 prominent Jews attended a $100-a-plate dinner at the Hotel Astor. New York, at which Chief Rabbi M. M. Epstein, dean and founder of the Yeshivah in Hebron, Palestine, was the chief guest. The dinner inaugurated the drive for funds toward maintaining the Yeshivah.
Morris Stern was Chairman of the Dinner Committee. Other members included S. Kaulman, N. Bayer. J. Weinstein. S. A. Israel, P. Herring, F. Hillman, M. Salit, A. Solomon, A. Marcuson, S. Bernstein, S. Golding. S. Kamlet, I. Haft, A. Isserman, L. Margolis, R. Miroslowsky, H. Schiff. Rabbi Isaac Dworetz. Dr. S. M. Machtai. Ben Z. Silver. Benjamin Shapiro is Treasurer of the campaign.
Thirty clubs representing the Intermediate Department of the Central Jewish Institute will hold their Annual Convention at the Institute, 125 E. 85th Street, New York. on Saturday evening, May 22nd. Officers will be elected for the governance of the Intermediate activities. Harold K. Addelstone is President.
Work will soon be started on a building to be crected by Jules E. Mastbaum of Philadelphia for housing his collection of Rodin sculptures, which he purchased recently in Paris. Both building and sculptures have been donated to the city by Mr. Mastbaum. The Museum will be designed by Jacques Graber and Dr. Paul P. Cret.
