Sholom Schwartzbard, avenger of the anti-Jewish pogroms in the Ukraine, who was acquitted by the French court of the slaying of Semion Petlura, was refused permission to enter Palestine, it was learned today.
Schwartzbard, a citizen of France, who remained in Paris following his acquittal, applied to the Palestine authorities for a visa, it being understood that he intended to settle there with his family. Although his sensational trial and acquittal placed Schwartzbard in the center of interest, the Paris watchmaker has shunned the limelight. It was stated that he intended to settle in Palestine to lead a peaceful, unhampered life.
His application to the Palestine Government for a visa was denied. The Colonial Office in London approved the Palestine Government’s decision.
No statement was issued here by the authorities as to the reasons for refusing the visa.
