It’s amazing the way Fall brings out the home-making instinct in women! It may manifest itself in any one of a number of ways, but it’s almost bound to appear in some form or other. One of the most frequent, is the urge to sit on a cushion and sew a fine seam. This particular germ bites the most unexpected people, and the first symptom is a maddening itch in the thimble finger and a tendency to gaze wistfully at lovely lengths of fabrics. It may not have attacked you yet, but just wait until the next time you call on your most be-groomed and be-lacquered girl friend and find her messing contentedly about on the floor with patterns and pins and scissors, and listen to her happy chant of “The most divine stuff, my dear! It will make the most heavenly blouse.” You’ll catch it then, and when you do, rush right up to McCreery’s yard goods department, select your material (this year they have the most magnificient fabrics) and you’re launched on the creative wave.

They’re gone forever, thank heaven, those days when we applied a tiny dab of bright color in the center of our lips, where it reposed like a cherry set in the midst of a half-stewed plum. Today, however large the mouth, we color it all frankly, and we do not neglect that little piece inside which shows when we smile. The new Mary Nolan lipstick definitely brightens life for lipstick users. It is indelible and colors the whole mouth smoothly and evenly and does away with that blurred look which is so fatal to chic.

Walk there—wherever it is! If you’ve no place to go—just walk anyway. It’s fun and it’s good for you! The first step in the right direction, though, is to get your feet into shoes that really fit, cause there’s no fun in stepping out if your feet hurt. Uncomfortable shoes cramp a gal’s style as well as her toes, whether she spends her time wielding a broom, a golf club or tramping around shops in quest of news for an anxious public. Enna Jettick shoes this year are being termed America’s smartest walking shoes and we must admit they’re mighty smart. You’ll find them stitched, perforated and trimmed with contrasting leathers. Crushed leather is used for oxfords to complement tweeds. Types with boyish heels will appeal if you’re taking your hiking seriously. And for your furtrimmed ensemble there’s a very satisfying choice of step-in pumps. They come in 180 different sizes and widths and they are priced at a modest five or six dollars.

American design has come to a place of leadership these past few years that includes not only dresses and coats but gloves as well. Saks 34th Street now sponsors that collection, the creation of Isabel Ireland. Miss Ireland has gone far afield in search of ideas for novel and smart glove designs. She is certain that she makes a nuisance of herself as she pokes about shops and counters and in all sorts of places where a lot of people think she has no business at all, seeking these ideas. For example, one of the most fetching of the collection is a cocktail glove that fastens with loop and frog— ### frog being an adaptation in ###led strips of kid. This idea was ###ken from the fashion for frogs ### evening wraps. Another in this line is a smartly tailored glove that buttons down the back, with the utmost simplicity—”to go with everything else these days that seems to be buttoning down the back,” says Miss Ireland. They are featured in six different styles. Three for the cocktail hour and the other three tailored for street and sports wear.
