The shortage of rabbis and cantors in England was discussed here today at a meeting of the United Synagogue Council which represents all major synagogues in the country.
Speakers pointed out that the reasons for the shortage are: 1. The salaries of rabbis and cantors are too low; 2. Fewer Jewish homes have a religious background; 3. Parents consider that other professions have a better future; 4. Religious Zionist groups are attracting religious youths to Israel who might otherwise have entered the rabbinate here.
