A simple ceremony marked the funeral service today for Dr. Judah L. Magnes, president of the Hebrew University, who died here yesterday. No eulogies were delivered, in accordance with the wishes of Dr. Magnes. Dr. Simon Greenberg, acting president of the Jewish Theological Seminary, where the rites were held, read selections from Psalms. Dr. David de Sola Pool officiated.
In addition to the surviving members of Dr. Magnest family leaders from all walks of Jewish life attended the funeral. Also present were members of the Hebrew University faculty now in this country. Burial took place at Cyprus Hills cemetery, Brooklyn.
Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, chairman of the American section of the Jewish Agency, and of the American Zionist Emergency Council, issued a statement saying that “Dr. Magnes was an early champion of the Zionist movement in this country” and emphasizing that “his greatest achievement was his leadership over many years of the Hebrew University.” Statements mourning the death of Dr. Magnes were also issued by Dr. Emanuel Heumann, president of the Zionist Organization of America; Judge Morris Rothenberg, president of the Jewish National Fund, and leaders of other Zionist groups in this country.
