Sir Alfred Yarrow, the great marine engineer and shipbuilder who has died at the age of 90, was the son of a Jewish mother, who was related to Disraeli, whom she knew well, the “Times” recalls to-day in its obituary notice.
This great engineer, the “Times” says, who remembered stage coaches, broadcast some of his reminiscences when he was 88, and had his first flight last September, when he flew over London in the Imperial Airways liner “Heracles”. Within two months he had made an air tour of Europe. Sir Alfred claimed to have been the first person in England to use a typewriter, it adds.
His first wife, the “Times” proceeds, was Minnie Florence Franklin. His eldest son, Mr. Harold Edgar Yarrow, who succeeds to the baronetcy, is Chairman of the Yarrow Shipbuilding firm and has served as President of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland. His youngest daughter is the wife of Lord Dawson of Penn, the King’s physician.
