An official communique issued this evening substantially confirms the statements of High Commissioner, Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope, to Moshe Shertok, member of the political department of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, who conferred with Sir Arthur this afternoon regarding the disturbances in Jaffa.
The communique stated that an illegal procession was formed at 12:30 p.m. and that the police were compelled to fire a few rounds in self-defense after several baton charges failed to disperse the mob which opened fire.
One policeman and three rioters were killed, according to the communique, and seven other rioters were reported killed. The official statement declared that the situation had returned to normal and that order was reestablished.
Sir Arthur had declared earlier that peace had been restored without calling out the military.
