Selwyn Lloyd, British Chancellor of the Exchequer, led the tributes last night at a dinner in honor of the 70th birthday of Sir Barnett Janner, Member of Parliament and president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews. Mr. Lloyd said the Jewish leader was one “whom all respected, admired and honored” and that his record of service in politics was parallel to his record in the Jewish community, which he called “unequalled in our time.”
Jacob Halevy, chairman of the British Zionist Federation, which sponsored the dinner, presented the guest of honor with a certificate recording the planting of a Janner Forest in Israel. Other speakers were Israel Ambassador Arthur Lourie, Harold Wilson, chairman of the Labor Party and Foreign Affairs spokesman for the opposition in the Government.
